XYZ Piano Bar was located in Nakagumi Business Plaza.
Overview[]
This establishment was a well-known Japantown fixture, featuring a dimly lit, smoke-wreathed bar, attractive bargirls who would sit on your lap if you bought them a watered-down drink, real wood paneling and leather booths. Patrons were urged by prodding from the bar girls and other customers.
The XYZ Piano Bar also specialized in karaoke singing: automated music players synched with open microphones provided for its guests. Patrons were welcomed to go up to the mike and sing renditions of popular songs (either in Japanese or English) accompanied by taped musical arrangements. A hologram system combined with sophisticated rear projection TV screen allowed the singer to even participate in canned music videos.
XYZ was also known as a popular yakuza gathering ground. The backside of the bar was the headquarters of the Kanzaki Family, the most powerful yakuza in Japantown. On weekend nights you were able to encounter many heavily built men with tattoos peeking from under suit cuffs, wearing wraparound shades, nursing their scotches-over-ice, fondling the bargirls, and discussing underworld business in whispered Japanese. Many solos or fixers of Japanese descent would come to this bar.[1]
