South Night City was a lawless combat zone located in central Night City during the Time of the Red.
History[]
2020s - 2030s[]
The area where South Night City stood was formerly an industrial port located in the southern parts of the city proper, on the peninsula. Due to neighboring Central Night City, the South City District was also affected by the small earthquake caused by the AHQ Disaster of 2023, which flooded and liquified some areas of the urban sprawl. During and after the Fourth Corporate War, many refuges from around the metropolitan area flooded the surrounding suburbs, constructing multitude of tent cities, including in South Night City.
Over the following years, while other areas managed to maintain the law in some form, the southern districts of the peninsula quickly fell into despair, with gangs taking much of the power. As such, they were soon labeled as combat zones, including much of South Night City. A good portion of the district was instead incorporated into the the Glen, the new seat of power for the central government of Night City.[1]
2040s[]
By the 2040s, this industrial sprawl and port area was filled with trigger-happy gangs and abandoned warehouses repurposed into hideouts. Some businesses and venues managed to avoid being pushed into the sea by mostly catering to the various gangs that claimed the district.[1] This status-quo was primarily because of the local city manager, Garven Haakensen, who prioritized making cash rather than doing his job. Although this wasn't uncommon in Night City, Haakensen was more blatant about it than others.[2] Protests between the Rebuilding Urban Center in the north and the combat zones in the south was a common occurrence. The border between South Night City and the Glen or University District was especially problematic, as gangs attacked their neighbors, protesters complained at the border, and the NCPD retaliated against both.[1][3] The chaos in the district made construction companies to build a large number of single-vehicle storages where the local residents could moderately secure their vehicles instead of parking them on the dangerous streets.[4] The rest of the port area, however, was still used as a major access point for cargo in and out of Night City, with the Thelas nomads running and protecting most of it.[2]
By 2045, things were exactly the same, however, a group known as the Zoners was starting to be formed. Its members were protesting against the diversion of reconstruction materials from South Night City to wealthier districts, but they their pleas were never heard. Moreover, the NCPD accessed SNC more than once to quell these protests. Ever since, brawls between Zoners and the NCPD intensified, until one time when the Zoners accessed the Glen. After a massive brawl against the NCPD, they retracted back. The Zoners were slowly building into a notable force in South Night City, with the sole objective of making their district be treated fairly in order to be able reconstruct, much like the rest of the city was doing as well. However, they were starting to realize they would need something more than protests to reach their objective.[3] Around this time, a portion of the district was reclaimed by a group of nomads, who had taken over the public transport operation in Night City.[2]
2050s - 2070s[]
After a group of reclaimers did an amazing job at cleaning up South Night City, the citizens of old Heywood decided to move into this area, kicking out the reclaimers and establishing a new home for themselves. They then renamed the district to Heywood, as for them that name represented who they were.[5]
