Project Nightingale was a secret research project by Biotechnica.

History[]

In 2077, a Biotechnica team consisting of Dr. Joanne Koch, Alex Pushkin[1]. and Diana Cuno[2], was responsible for the unscrupulous capture of Red Ocher nomads members for scientific experiments. Using them as test subjects resulted in the deaths of at least 70 clan members[3][4].

While Dr. Koch claimed her research was related to antibiotics development, others described the procedure as being poisoned[5][6]. Dr. Isaacson from Biotechnica performed autopsies on some of the deceased Red Ocher Nomads, noting that the cause of death was "electromagnetic overstimulation" along with other abnormal changes such as drastic neuralgic growth.[7] Even handling the corpses afterwards proved to be dangerous as one Biotechnica employee, Brandon Murphy, lost an arm just from coming into contact with the victims.[5]

Based on their behavior in covering up some of the later leaks, and the notes of Manuel Mendoza[4], the study may have been done on behalf of Militech.

Despite Dr. Koch's best efforts to offer them hush-money in return for their "forgiveness", the Red Ocher reached out to Dino Dinovic to have her killed, who, in turn, put out a hit on Koch, which V can take.[3]

One of the affected Red Ochers, Cedric Muller, described the effects of the scientific experiments as his fellow clan members' "lungs collapsing". He himself tried to procure neuroblockers from Scavengers to suppress the pain, but as they tried to carve him up instead, Cedric went cyberpsycho and killed the attackers. If V takes Cedric down non-lethally, Regina Jones will remark that she is hopeful that Cedric will recuperate and be able rejoin his Nomad family.[8][6][9]

After evidence of the project leaks, Biotechnica pins the blame on Diane Cuno[2], who they then have murdered[10][11]

After Joanne Koch used planted documents to cause Emilia Morton to be fired from Biotechnica, Emilia threatens to reveal the project to the public[12]. After she agreed to speak with the reporter Manuel Mendoza[4], Emilia is killed by Biotechnica-associated Animals[13][14].

Reporter Zoli Barnes, who was investigating Brad Noorwood, a Militech ally on the Night City Council, is struck and killed by a train, not long after agreeing to speak with the reporter Manuel Mendoza[4]. The death is ruled a suicide and all evidence is confiscated by Militech[15][16].
