The Open Road, also known as the Open Road Zones, was the name designated to refer to the major roads in and around Del Coronado Bay during the Time of the Red.[1]
History[]
2020s - 2030s[]
After the Fourth Corporate War, during the mid-late 2020s, the open roads of North and South California were the home of roving gangs on spiky cars and motorcycles, well-defended nomad caravans, and those few who had to transverse them. These roads and highways were littered in some areas with dead, burned-out vehicles and dust.
Over the following years, by the 2030s, these regions were still open and usable, and little by little they were resembling more Route 66 than the Mad Max highways. All this was due to the nomad families taking greater control of the world's commerce and shipping, and thanks to their surplus in military hardware, it was easier for them to drive out the gangs and make the roads safer for travel.[1]
2040s[]
Although by the 2040s nomads had done a great job, these open roads were still dangerous to traverse. The City Council of Night City considered the areas in their vicinity to have a threat level of "Outskirts," which meant it was outside of the city's jurisdiction, therefore the only valid laws out there were the ones you made for yourself, except for those places controlled by the reclaimer and nomad families. It was well known that harsh groups of lawmen patrolled the open roads in search of gangoons and roadwarrior wannabes infesting the highways.[1]
