The Galileo Cylinder (also known as O'Neill Two) is a space station located at the Earth-Moon Lagrange point 3, in a stable position not far from the Earth.

History[]

During the construction of the Crystal Palace, the European Space Agency planned the O'Neill Colonies as the second step in space colonization. These stations were concepted to be built along a cylindrical plan composed of lunar rock and metal framing, with the whole interior surface covered in earth, and with waterways and huge windows that allowed sunlight to enter.[1]

O'Neill Two was the second of these habitat colonies and began construction at the Lagrange point 3 in 2011. Upon completion in 2017, it was given the name of Galileo Cylinder. This space station was smaller compared to the older sister colony of O'Neill One, at around 16km long and 6km wide.

In 2022, during the Fourth Corporate War, the stations and satellites in close orbit to Earth suffered tremendously. Many highriders were forced to leave and travel to the more secure O'Neill colonies, causing the space habitats to exceed their rated capacity. At the same time, the ESA and Orbital Air began restricting flights to space due to the hazards of the war. The highriders protested for their need to resupply and evacuation of refugees and tourists, but neither space organization provided any support.[2]

Finally, in September of that same year, the highriders at O'Neill Two had enough and declared their independence, leading the colony into a full-on conflict against the ESA. This endeavor was soon supported by their fellow companions at the O'Neill One. Known as the Seven Hour War for its length, the highriders used deltas and mass drivers to attack key sites on Earth. The damage caused by them was enough for governments to recognize their independence, forcing the ESA to officially prescind from both O'Neill stations, leading to the creation of the first nation outside of Earth, the Highrider Confederation.[1][2][3][4]

In 2077, a solar storm temporarily blinded the radar systems around Galileo, allowing a group of thieves to sneakily dock with the station. They proceeded to breach into an Orbital Air laboratory and steal millions of eurodollars worth of experimental prototypes. The ESA offered a generous reward to anyone willing to assist them in apprehending the thieves.[5]
