The Nuova Mafia is an anti-corporate offshoot of the Italian Mafia.
History[]
In 2004, the Sicilian Mafia and Neapolitan Camorra were legalized as legitimate political parties in Italy, and the now Mafia-controlled government began selling parts of southern Italy to corporations. This led to the rise of the Nuova Mafia, a group of both violent criminals and anti-corporate nationalists. They filled the void for blackmail, kidnapping, and drug-trafficking left by the other mafia families trying to go "legitimate".
In 2018, the Nuova Mafia launched a series of terrorist attacks across Italy, seizing the province of Calabria. Several cities in the south were placed under martial law because of this, which hadn’t been rescinded by 2020.[1]
