Sister city to Night City, and the home of the NorCal Military Base.[1]

 — The Suburban Sprawls, Night City Sourcebook

North Oak[2] was a city located in the Greater Night City Area, as well as a suburb of Central Night City. It would eventually become the Watson Development.

Overview[]

North Oak was the closet neighbor of Night City, and despite being smaller than its sister city, North Oak's towering structures and ship-superstructures could be sen across the bay from East Marina, and from the neighboring Westbrook, this last one being built on the hills above North Oak. Connecting both North Oak and Central Night City was Del Coronado Bridge. Ferry connections from Central Night City to North Oak and Pacifica were available, and NCART connections with the metropolitan area were available from this city as well.

North Oak was predominantly considered a military city for various reasons. First, it was home to the NorCal Military Base, which had been established as part of the deal that allowed Northern California to maintain its titular independence from the Union as a Free State. Second, most of its shops sold to military personnel or their families, and the majority of the population was, in some way or another, associated with the aforementioned huge military industrial complex.

The city of North Oak was almost entirely federally owned and operated. The "Mayor" was the commander of the base, and of the twelve city councilmen, eleven had always been or were in the military. North Oak was no longer even considered a Californian city as the military police patrolled the streets instead of the regular one, and all justice was handled in a military court under a military version of the Uniform Justice Code. The military ran the city with an iron fist, acting as judge, jury, and executioner in all criminal cases, keeping its crime rate a mere percentage of Night City's.

On the other hand, living on North Oak's wide, oak-shaded streets could be quite agreeable. The homes were pleasant, pastel-colored bungalows with identical numbered curbs. Schools were top of the line and the base hospital, theatre, officers and enlisted Clubs, and the base exchange shopping mall provided almost anything a citizen could want. This city also had the main industrial port of the Great Night City Area, alongside with South Night City.[1][2]

The hills around North Oak and Westbrook were filled with trails and parks. Protected by Apex systems, these areas advertised as a secure and safe setting to peacefully enjoy nature. Other parts of these hills had some of hunting grounds, offering plenty of sport for the city residents. Biotechnica had recently released their new Mule Deer 2000™.[1]

Notes[]

  • The individual last map of Westbrook in the Night City Sourcebook is mistakenly attributed to North Oak and its locations, when it should be the other way around.
