Sister city to Night City, and the home of the NorCal Military Base.

— The Suburban Sprawls, Night City Sourcebook

North Oak[2] (also known as NorthOak[1] and Section H) is a city located on the shores of Del Coronado Bay - being north of, and the closest neighbor to Night City.

The northern half of North Oak borders the sea to the west and south, and Westbrook to the north and east. The southern half borders the sea to the northwest, a small part of Westbrook to the northeast, Heywood to the far south, and South Night City to the west-southwest. Del Coronado Bay is found in the southern shores of the northern half, and the northwestern shores of the other half. Connecting both Central Night City and North Oak is Del Coronado Bridge.

Overview[]

North Oak is a military city - most of its shops sell to military personnel or their families, and the majority of the population is, in some way or another, associated with this huge military industrial complex. Despite being smaller than Night City, its towering structures and ship-superstructures can be seen across Del Coronado Bay from East Marina. Westbrook is built on the hills above North Oak.

In the light of vast post-war funding cutbacks and the rise of the Free States, the Pentagon fell back to the concept of core bases: large, well-defended installations that would protect a regional area and support units from all four branches of the military. The colosal NorCal Military Base was established as part of the deal that allowed Northern California to maintain its titular independence from the Union as a Free State. The government of NorCal kept an opinion of neutrality towards the base, as it would also protect them from any road-gang scum coming north to raid for water.

The city of North Oak is almost entirely federally owned and operated. The "Mayor" is the commander of the base, and of the twelve city councilmen, eleven are now, or have been in the military. North Oak is no longer even considered a Californian city - M.P.'s patrol the streets instead of police, and all justice is handled in a military court under a military version of the Uniform Justice Code. The military runs North Oak with an iron fist, acting as judge, jury, and executioner in all criminal cases, keeping its crime rate a mere percentage of Night City's.

Living on North Oak's wide, oak-shaded streets can be quite agreeable. The homes are pleasant, pastel-colored bungalows with identical numbered curbs. Schools are top of the line and the Base Hospital, Theatre, Officers and Enlisted clubs, and the Base Exchange shopping mall will provide almost anything a citizen might want.[1][2]

After the Fourth Corporate War, the ruined North Oak would be renamed, turning into a development region known as Watson.[3]

  • The individual last map of Westbrook in the Night City Sourcebook is mistakenly attributed to North Oak and its locations, when it should be the other way around.
