The New Harbor Mallplex (officially named the New Harbor Shopping Redevelopment & Residential Complex) was a multi-level shopping plaza and mini-arcology situated in the New Harbor Area, on the eastern side of Central Night City.[3][2]
History[]
1980s - 2010[]
In the 1980s, a small shopping center known as the Harbor Mall was built in the township of Morro Bay. Prior to the Collapse, during the Morro Bay Massacre, this building was vacated and eventually destroyed. After the founding of Night City (originally Coronado City) in 1994, the ruins of the former shopping center remained untouched, and would stay like that more than a decade.
In 2009, during the infamous Mob War, the core center of Night City was partially cleared and restored by the city's corporations. The remains of the shopping center were finally demolished and the area was cleared for the construction of a project known as the New Harbor Shopping Mall, a mini-arcology housing a mega-shopping mall. Like other similar structures in the United States at that time, this new edifice was set around a magnet-store, in this case, a store owned by the national Shop-Mart chain.
By 2010, the new megastructure was officially established as the New Harbor Shopping Redevelopment & Residential Complex, planned to be capable of housing thousands of inhabitants as well as service workers and salespeople. Although the construction was not finished, the building was partially opened to the public, who started to simply call it the New Harbor Mallplex.[3][4]
2011 - 2022[]
In 2011, after another year of construction, the heavily secured shopping mall was finally inaugurated and completely opened to the public, holding more than two dozen of varied stores. An additional small business office tower was added in 2012, as it was only a minor step for the mall's corporate owners to add in several levels of residential conapts and suites for its employees, culminating in the final micro-arcology it became.
By 2013, the New Harbor Mallplex had quickly raised to become the biggest shopping center in Night City, absorbing clientele and stores from other malls in the surrounding metropolitan area. The mallplex contained hundreds of conapts, stores, food courts, recreational complexes, schools, and even its own police force and fire department. Described as a "city within a city," the New Harbor Mallplex was self-contained and increasingly isolated from the outside by its fortress mentality.[3]
The megastructure was destroyed by shellfire during the Fourth Corporate War in 2022. The residential Night City megabuildings constructed during the Time of the Red were modeled after the Mallplex.[2]

Underground parking levels
The New Harbor Mallplex was a massive structure with almost five to ten thousand people living packed in its labyrinthine corridors. Most of the residential and managerial offices were located on the upper floors, and its residential areas extend deep into the muddy bay bottom surrounding the northeastern part of Central Night City, as well as in two towering levels above the public-accessible main shopping course. The Mallplex had its own conapts, stores, food courts, recreational complexes, schools, power generators, fire stations, private police and broadcast stations. The infrastructure also included a large underground parking lot.
Each level and area of the Mallplex was dedicated to a specific purpose; no space was wasted. Security was amazingly complex and tight, with every square inch covered by cameras and sensors. The mall police was described as draconian and was very feared. Passcards were required to get from the public areas to the residential sectors, and a lost or stolen card carried a 1000 eb fine or potential eviction from the complex.
The Mallplex was divided into eight areas: Wing Living Areas Alpha, Beta and Gamma, which contained conapts, schools and services; the Business Tower, which was used as rental space for businesses usually connected to the Mall in some way; the Administration Complex, which included the Mall Police, Fire and Administration services; the Shop-Mart magnet-store; the Main Shopping Concourse; and the underground parking.[3]
Administration Complex[]
The administration complex was located on the easternmost portion of the Mallplex, holding the main offices for the Mall Administration. The two ground floors contained a three vehicle Fire Department, and a well-armed Mall Police Department; this last one was described as "rabidly attitudinal."
Business Tower[]
The business tower was located on the northernmost portion of the Mallplex, and was joined to the main shopping concourse by a large walk-bridge over the canal. The tower held seven floors of assorted offices, including two law firms, seven consulting firms, a tax attorney's office, five doctors and a dental clinic. The top two floors were occupied by Ebertech, a software firm specializing in braindance videogame design.
Living Area Alpha[]
This building module, also known as the Executive's Tower, contained 500 luxury apartments designated for the Mall Administration and staff. Most residents didn't need a passcard, as only high-ranking members of the Mallplex staff were allowed to enter this area.
Living Area Beta[]
This building module contained around 3,500 one-bedroom living conapts, arranged around a central light shaft. The two ground level floors held a school (until 9th grade) with an enclosed schoolyard, a badly stocked library, and the entryway to an underground parking structure.
Living Area Gamma[]
This building module contained around 1,000 two-bedroom living conapts, with two light wells at either end of the living area. The two ground levels held a high school, a 100 bed mini-hospital, a Mall-only radio/TV station (KMALL), a large recreation and gym area, and a post office.
