City Center Station was an NCART station located in the City Center district of Central Night City.
Overview[]
This NCART station was located on the south side of 5th street, where wide concrete steps lead down to the underground facility. There had been sporadic attempts by the city to keep the stairs clean and the brass railings polished, but the fumes, dust and trash integral to a subway line kept them gritty.
The train platform was a typical concrete slab, with a few, molded concrete benches scattered around. There was a shoeshine stand tended by an ancient Hispanic man, a small overpriced barber shop, and a newsstand with screamsheets, books and more.
The Transit Police kept the platform clear of beggars, and dorphers, but there were a large number of young boys and girls here at all hours of the day, plying their trade. Rumor abounded that some were so skilled they could administer their services on a crowded maglev car with no one else being the wiser. There were also those who made aggressive passes at prospective clients as a cover to pickpocket.
The juviegangers referred to this station as "The Zoo." This was their most popular hangout, because the security was loose and the clients less depraved than those found in the Plaza Center Station (aka "The Jungle"), yet the money was every bit as good. Despite the fact that most of the kids were hooked on one or more illegal drugs, they knew the letter of the law and could avoid doing anything technically illegal when trying to turn a trick. That, and the fact that their customer base was made of rich taxpayers, prevented the Transit Police from running them off, although NCART occasionally mounted a few sting operations.[1]
