Description

On the edge of cyberpsychosis but determined to save Lucy, David storms into Night City as Arasaka plots to deploy their ultimate lethal weapon.

After being fooled by Faraday into becoming a test subject for Arasaka's experimental cyberskeleton, David decides he will use his newfound powers to rescue Lucy, who is held captive by Faraday in an AV headed toward Arasaka Tower. Unfortunately, the cyberskeleton is quickly causing him to spiral into advanced cyberpsychosis. The military-grade suppressants he acquired from Doc, even at 9x the strength of standard suppressants, are quickly being depleted.

Rebecca, Falco and David head to Arasaka Tower in their getaway vehicle, while being pursued by Militech and Arasaka. Kiwi, who had double-crossed them, attempts to flee the city, but is forced to turn back. Faraday--her co-conspirator--demands she come retrieve the payment for her betrayal in person. When she arrives, Faraday critically wounds her with a bullet to the chest. While passing away, she makes one last call to Falco and Rebecca, giving them the coordinates of Faraday's AV. Faraday's thugs finish her off, but not before she manages to decapitate one of them.

David, Falco and Rebecca evade their pursuers using a combination of combat and driving skills. Behind the scenes, the Arasaka Counterintelligence agents (Kate and Douglas) who had conspired with Faraday using the promise of money and employment at Arasaka, are planning to double-cross him as well. They have hired the legendary Night City boogeyman, Adam Smasher, to take care of David and to prevent Faraday from advancing into the tower. Adam does not seem bothered, noting a significant weakness in the cyberskeleton's anti-gravity dependency.

David splits from Rebecca and Falco, who crash their vehicle into Faraday's AV before plummeting to the plaza at the bottom of Arasaka Tower, where they are quickly surrounded by soldiers. David, on his last vial of suppressants, climbs to the top of Arasaka Tower, and proclaims he has finally fulfilled his mother's dream. He reflects on Doc telling him his fate is sealed and accepts there was no other way for him. Faraday's AV docks at Arasaka Tower, where he attempts to exchange Lucy for his promised payment and position at Arasaka, but is told by Douglas that he will only receive money because he failed to deliver test data on the cyberskeleton.

Moments later, David enters, quickly killing the surrounding soldiers and freeing Lucy from Faraday's grasp. When David attempts to shoot Douglas, the bullet is intercepted by Adam Smasher. Faraday proclaims he has now fulfilled his end of the bargain, since both Lucy and the cyberskeleton are here, when David generates a gravity field around Faraday, causing his leg to be severed. Adam and David exchange insults, while Trauma Team shows up to help Faraday. This distracts David for a moment, during which he is shot in the stomach by Adam.

David activates his Sandevistan, killing the Trauma Team deployment, and attempts to escape with Lucy. Adam hits him in the back with an RPG round, knocking him and Faraday's stretcher out of the building. While careening through the air, Lucy manages to recover David from a cyberpsychosis episode with a kiss. Against the backdrop of the moon, Lucy and David explain how they only wanted to protect each other. David says his only remaining purpose is getting Lucy to the moon, when they are interrupted by Adam Smasher shooting at them from an elevator. David safely lands on the Edgerunners' escape vehicle using anti-grav, where Falco and Rebecca are having a standoff against Arasaka troops. Faraday is reduced to a pile of gore when he finally hits the ground.

David, after putting Lucy in the escape vehicle, asks Falco for a favor off-screen. Meanwhile, Rebecca jealously tells Lucy she's glad to have her back--for David's sake. At that moment, she notices Adam Smasher falling toward them. She attempts to shoot up at him, and is promptly crushed beneath his weight, which collapses the entire plaza into a subterranean area. Falco, enraged by Rebecca's death, attempts to attack Adam and is incapacitated by a gutpunch. David activates his Sandy and attempts to attack Smasher but is evaded. He is shocked to see that Adam also has a Sandevistan--which he felt made him "special"--to which Adam remarks that it is a "rudimentary implant." David tells Adam that this is solely between them. Smasher rebuffs by saying he intends to kill them all, regardless. Just then, David falls to his knees due to lack of suppressants.

Lucy notices that David is vulnerable and attempts to hack Smasher, only to have her OS fried. Falco takes her in the escape vehicle and begins to flee. When Adam attempts to fire at them, he is blindsided by David who hits him with a gravity field. Adam, enraged, tears the anti-grav generators off the cyberskeleton, causing it to collapse on itself. He then proceeds to savagely beat David. Lucy, observing the carnage from a distance, pleads with Falco to turn back, but is denied. He says David's last wish (the favor he requested earlier) was to get Lucy to safety with the reward money, and to tell her he's sorry they couldn't go to the moon together. In his last moments, David laughs, seemingly contented with his fate. When Adam implies that he could be turned into an interesting "construct", David says he doesn't care. Adam proceeds to kill a smiling David by shooting him in the head (artistically implied).

An unknown amount of time later, Lucy is seen dejectedly sitting aboard a tour shuttle to the moon. On landfall, she heads to the area she and David visited in their braindance. There, she has a vision of pre-timeskip David, who is excitedly shouting about the heat of the sun, just as he did during the braindance. She is in shock for a moment, grins, then makes a pained expression as he disappears. There are heavy bags under her eyes, suggesting she has been mourning for a while. With a sad smile, she closes her eyes, turns toward the sun, spreads her arms and embraces its warmth.

Notes

• The outcome of the plot is heavily foreshadowed in both the show's opening and ending credit sequences. The opening sequence ends with David being shot in the head by a towering figure superimposed by images of skyscrapers. The ending sequence shows a rather sad looking Lucy walking through a cyberpunk environment, and features multiple shots of her crying before looking up at the moon as if having a sudden realization.
• Adam Smasher is first mentioned by Doc in Episode 7, while David is in the process of getting more chrome installed to mirror Maine's progression. David tells Doc that Adam Smasher sounds like a hoax.
• In Episode 8, while blankly staring at a TV due to insomnia, David sees a commercial for tickets to the moon, priced at 250,000 eurodollars. He comments it's cheaper than he thought, to which Lucy responds that it only covers a one-way ticket. At the beginning of Episode 9, David says their total sum payout for Faraday's final job is "2 and a half mil(lion)" eddies, which was already paid upfront. Since only Falco and Lucy survive the encounter with Smasher at Arasaka Tower, this would give Lucy 1.25 million eddies if evenly split between the two of them. It's also worth noting that, at the end of this episode, while Lucy is on the moon shuttle, a voice over the intercom says it is a "moon tour." Whether she decided to visit the moon or live there permanently is up for speculation, as she can afford both (there are two major residential cities).
• David is remembered as a Night City Legend, and therefore has a drink (The David Martinez) named after him at the Afterlife bar. The drink's ingredients are vodka and NiCola.
