This article is about the Mayor of Night City. For other uses, see Ebunike (disambiguation).

Mbole Ebunike, previously known as Judson Freeman, was a character in the Cyberpunk universe.

Biography[]

2010s[]

Judson Freeman was elected the mayor of Night City in 2012, after the infamous Mob War of the previous years. He had been groomed to become a well-behaved puppet of the corporations, and acted according to their will. As such, he was a favorite among them, and with their support, Judson managed to win the reelection of 2016.

This time, however, the Mayor had become rather intransigent, very different to how he was during his first term. Judson was tired of being a simple puppet, and during his second term, he tried to rebuild his self-esteem by vetoing anything that was proposed, acting against his former masters. This stance angered the corporations around the city. Judson had also become heavily involved in the Pan Neo-African political party, to the point that he changed his own name to Mbole Ebunike to reflect his change in politics.[1]

2020s[]

By 2020, despite being reelected into office,[2] Mbole was very unpopular and usually spent most of his time out of office, leaving the day-to-day operations to his Assistant Mayor, Garven Haakensen. And the times he was in office, he maintained the door locked, preferring to remain unavailable, and leaving his hapless secretary to deal with the furious visitors.[1]

By July of 2023, during the Fourth Corporate War, the Arasaka Corporation had taken control over much of Night City, using the metropolis against Militech. Mayor Mbole Ebunike, who had recently protested against the actions of Arasaka, "suffered a nervous breakdown" and stepped down, with Assistant Mayor Haakensen taking the reins.[3]

In the unreliable flashbacks of Johnny Silverhand, he was mentioned by a news anchor in decrying the ongoing terrorist actions against the Arasaka Towers,[4] something that could not have happened as he had recently stepped down due to health reasons.

Notes[]

  • It's unknown whether Ebunike died or not in the AHQ Disaster, but by 2045, Night City hadn't had a mayor for quite some time. His deputy, Garven Haakensen, was still alive in 2045 but no longer was Assistant Mayor.
  • Ever since the late 2040s, a freight ship named after Ebunike had been moored at the northern docks of Night City.[5]
