Disambig This article is about the location in Cyberpunk 2020. For other uses, see Marina (disambiguation).

The Marina District was one of the neighborhood districts of Central Night City, located to the northeast. It was considered part of Little Europe.

History[]

1990s - 2010s[]

The Marina District[2][3][1] was built on the northern waterfront of Night City. Prior to the 2000s, during the city's early years, this area was the home of numerous local private yachts, a sizable fishing fleet, and the headquarters of the port authority. It was divided into two sections; Upper Marina was designed to blend in architectural elements to resemble San Francisco's North Beach and Marina districts, while East Marina housed an industrial port and pier area. There were also NCTC bus connections to other parts of Central & South Night City, which were available through lines 17, 22 and 72. NCART connections with the metropolitan area were available as well. These waterfronts could handle yachts, cruise ships, and other recreational boating activities, though a major portion of the industrial port would be established in the neighboring North Oak, a suburb connected to this district via Del Coronado Bridge. The Marina's finger-style piers had been constructed inspired by the ones in Morro Bay, which were suitable for unloading the break-bulk freighters of the 19th and 20th centuries. Unfortunately, this kind of vessels were becoming obsolete, being replaced by modular cargo ships.[1][4]

Over the following years, the heavy industrialization of North Oak and South Night City made their ports, especially the San Morro Bay Cargo & Container Port, to become the preferred choice for much of the commercial maritime traffic. This caused the Marina District to slowly but surely loose influence, and a partial gentrification just accelerated the change. By the late 2010s, the Marinas had become a seedy industrial district characterized by low rents and few business requiring large amount of space. Nonetheless, the whole area still retained a certain maritime air thanks to the many smugglers and small-time dockworkers in the locale.[1][4]

2020s[]

By 2020, the renovated Night City Yacht Club still saw a fair amount of corporate visitors, while a modern ferry building connected this area of Night City with the suburbs of North Oak and Pacifica. Moreover, the northwestern waterfront housed a jogging path with a combat parcourse. Scuba diving classes were also taught here, despite the waters of Del Coronado Bay being very polluted. Local pirates also made their homes here, nomad groups who raided smuggling ships in order to take the illegal cargo for themselves. It was said that if you looked hard enough and were willing to pay the price, you could find anything in the many obscured markets around the area. The district's marginally maintained docks were still used by a number of sailboats, echoing to the happier times when this area was a hub for maritime traffic. Despite this, the port authority continued to be based here, though the criminal presence had increased, with the groups like the Water Rats and Wild Things becoming a nuisance for the locals, and smugglers and pirates making it worse for the Night City Harbor Police, who had to employ stringiest measures in an attempt to control the situation.[1]

After the Fourth Corporate War, this district would evolve into the new and larger Upper Marina.[4]
