Maine is a solo and a major character in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
Biography[]
Maine used to be a military soldier before he became a mercenary. Now a veteran edgerunner in Night City, Maine dreams of "making it big", although he values his friendships with his crew more than his glory.[5]
Always seeking to better himself with cyberware, Maine would make a deal with Gloria Martinez, an Emergency Medical Technician who dealt in black market implants. Before Maine's deal could be completed, Gloria would be the victim of gang violence. Maine would later get word from Lucy that his Sandevistan had been spotted on another person. Lucy would set a trap for David Martinez on Maine's behalf.[6][7]
Maine brought two members of his crew with him: his girlfriend Dorio, and another member named Pilar. Maine confronted David in Lucy's apartment, where the trap had been set, angrily messaging him during David's braindance with Lucy. Maine assaulted David and used his superior physique to suspend him by one leg. Maine, still working under the belief that David had stolen the Sandevistan on purpose, discussed plans to end David's life with Pilar.[8]
David would clear up the misunderstanding, and Maine would offer his condolences. Maine would still be agitated about his loss of access to the Sandevistan, so David would offer to work to pay off his debt. Maine and Pilar initially rejected the idea, until Lucy vouched for David's abilities. Still unconvinced, David would demonstrate by moving Pilar's cigarette around the room at high speeds. David asked Maine to take him on a job so he could prove himself.[7]
Maine agreed to the deal. David was introduced to another member of Maine's crew, Kiwi. Maine involved David in a job to steal data from Arasaka bodyguard Maxim Kuznetsov. The job did not go to plan, with a change in Maxim's schedule causing him to catch on to the plan. David was forced to flee with Lucy's car and deal with pursuing Tyger Claws, calling on his Sandevistan several times to deal with the situation. David would drive to Aldo's shop, only to have one of the pursuing Tyger Claws attack David and Lucy. Maine arrived by car and intervene just in time to save David from being killed by a Mantis Blade, executing the gang member with his hand cannon. With the threat removed and the car data now secure, the job was now complete.[7]
David was invited to a celebration held by Maine's crew. Maine was impressed with David's abilities, and despite the apparent debt, offered David medication and a cut of the payment from the job. Maine then recommended David pursue additional cyberware upgrades. A bond was formed, putting David on Maine's crew, and a life path as an Edgerunner. David also met the final member of Maine's crew, Rebecca, at this celebration. Maine was confronted by the fixer for the job, Faraday, who would be unsatisfied by the way the job had turned out. Maine would promise to satisfy all of Faraday's future demands.[7]
David pestered Maine for additional work and training, with Maine calling upon other members of the crew to keep him busy. Maine provided David with his first gun. At the same meeting place, Maine would also encourage David to pursue a romantic relationship with Lucy.[9]
Maine would enter a conflict with a cyberpsycho who suddenly murdered Pilar, saving David from a hand cannon when he froze up, as well as Rebecca from another hand cannon shot when she became reckless during the conflict. Maine would direct Kiwi to knock out Rebecca to save her from making more reckless decisions. Maine would experience a malfunction in his arm cannon during the conflict. David would fire a shot into the cyberpsycho's head at point black range. David assumed the cyberpycho's death and asked for Lucy's safety. However the cyberpsycho would surprisingly somehow not be dead after this. Maine would decapitate the cyberpsycho with a melee strike from his Gorilla Arms, saving David again after he had dropped his guard. Maine remained to speak with the NCPD about the incident while trusting his girlfriend Dorio to take care of his crew.[9]
After the incident, Maine would offer Pilar's cyberware hands to David, which David would refuse, saying they were not suited to him. David would gesture at Maine's hands and Maine then offered to allow David to inherit his own cyberware hand on the day that he flatlined.[9]
After insights about braindances from David, Maine's crew cooked up a scheme to abduct Jimmy Kurosaki. However, things didn't go according to plan, with David, Maine, and Kiwi all being neutralized by Kurosaki's EMP. Kurosaki would turn the tables on them by abducting David, forcing Dorio to temporarily take over leading the crew.[10]
Dorio was successful in recovering David and completing the abduction of Kurosaki. Their plan to lure Tanaka to them with Kurosaki's help went ahead. Despite being outnumbered, Tanaka attacked Maine's crew, during which Maine experienced another malfunction in his cyberware. Maine successfully knocks out Tanaka in order to abduct him, however, Tanaka's needle projectiles killed Kurosaki, forcing Maine's crew to flee as Trauma Team was incoming.[10]
Falco joined up with Maine's crew during this time.[10]
After Tanaka's abduction, Maine began to experience medical issues due to his over-reliance on cyberware. Dorio implored Maine to downgrade in order to improve his condition, but the cyberware-addicted Maine was in denial and refused to consider it. Maine's personality degraded, and he would experience his first mini episode of cyberspychosis, during which he attacked Kiwi, removing her cyberware jaw before becoming lucid again.[10]
Dorio summoned Lucy and David to discuss Maine's deteriorating condition and his risk of cyberpsychosis. David would speak with Maine privately. Maine was uncharacteristically abusive.[11]
After being injected with several drugs, Maine would become lucid again. Dorio and Maine would return to David and Lucy's side, just in time to witness Tanaka flatlining. The jammer for Maine's crew was also fried at the same time, forcing Maine's crew to react to the incoming Trauma Team. David fled with Lucy's unconscious body to a downstairs car, while Maine would take Tanaka's resurrected body for use as a meat shield during the incoming confrontation. Dorio would remain at Maine's side.[11]
Maine and Dorio stood back to back and confront a combination of the NCPD and Trauma Team. However as the fighting continued, Maine broke down into full cyberpsychosis, losing full touch with reality, and began shooting at Dorio, unable to distinguish friend from foe. Dorio briefly brought Maine back to lucidity with a dose of immunosuppressants, just in time to see her be killed by being shot through the back of the head by a panicking NCPD officer.[11]
Maine's brief period of lucidity allowed him to understand he was at fault, but having lost his partner and realized his error, he willingly succumbed to cyberpsychosis and proceeded to kill more members of the NCPD and Trauma Team. David would return to Maine's side after securing Lucy, but he would send David away despite his protests. Maine constructed a pyre of sorts for Dorio out of explosive canisters, and was finally killed along with several Maxtac officers after he detonated the canisters. Acting on Maine's final request, David used the Sandevistan to escape the blast .[11]
David returned to Lucy's car with one of Maine's arms, which offered him something to bury, as well as the opportunity to inherit Maine's cyberware hand.[11]
Despite Maine's descent into cyberpyschosis, he would be the inspiration behind how David would live out the rest of his life, trying to embody both Maine's cyberware physique as well as all his values.[11]
Lucy wrote "You were the only family I ever had" on Pilar, Dorio and Maine's shared niche in Night City's Columbarium.

- He is mentioned the first time in Episode 1 Let You Down, when Gloria Martinez calls him from her apartment. It is not revealed to the audience, what their conversation is about or who Maine is. Maine doesn't appear in the show until the very end of Episode 2 Like A Boy, where he meets David Martinez in Lucy's apartment, and demands the Sandevistan from him.
- While seemingly ruthless, he clearly seems touched when David tells about his mother's death.
