The Mafia, or the Mob, is an international criminal organization originating in Italy, though with divisions in America.

Overview[]

The Mafia began in Sicily, but it’s now also the most powerful organised crime network in the America. They maintain many legitimate holdings, but make a bulk of their money through corruption and bribery. Their main interests are political corruption, racketeering, loansharking, and rigged gambling, though dealing drugs is frowned upon. They often steal money from organisations without them even knowing they were there.

In addition to crime, they’ll also usually provide the community they reside in with goods and services such as "surplus" goods and cash. This is to endear the community to them and to allow them to receive services from them as "payback".

When someone provokes the wrath of the Mob, a "hit" will be placed on them. Any member of the Mafia can volunteer themselves to take out the hit, with the Godfather deciding ultimately who to give the contract to, and the successful volunteer receiving a substantial amount of money. Mafia hit-men are some of the best hired killers in the world.[1]

The two most prominent mafia families, the Cosa Nostra and the Neapolitan Camorra, are also now recognised as legitimate political parties in Italy.[2] There American cousins, however, seem to have continued to operate as normal.

Organization[]

Each Mafia group is run by a central family and "owns" their city, with hundreds of "wiseguys" not part of the family working below them. Each family is run by a godfather, who hands the title down to his eldest son or male relative.

A "commission" of Capos oversees the running of all the Mafia families, but stays out of criminal acts themselves to remain untouchable by the law. They assign what Mafia has rule over what city and settle disputes between the families.

Mafia Families have been known on occasion to go to war with each other, but most of the times the people they’re going to war against are other crime syndicates such as the Yakuza or Triads that are trying to muscle into their turf.[1]

History[]

In 2004, the Italian government decided to legalise the Cosa Nostra and Neapolitan Camorra as legitimate political parties, hoping that this would stop them from bribing and blackmailing other politicians to do their dirty work. Some families of the Italian Mafia attempted to start cleaning up their game after this in hopes of becoming politically-powerful themselves, while others such as the Nuova Mafia turned their back on the organization and became more disjointed.[2]
