Hayato Nakagawa, also known as Shinobu the Second, is a character in Cyberpunk RED.

Biography[]

Early life - 2030s[]

Hayato was adopted by Shinobu Nakagawa after the former's parents death. During his childhood, he would be betrothed to Ryoko Fujiwara, young daughter of a renowned Japanese family. Hayato would also befriend Hiroto Miyamoto, both growing up in Night City.

After the Fourth Corporate War, when Hayato had grown up, he tried and failed to be a Kabuki actor. Disappointed, he eventually decided to join the Tyger Claws instead, where he would make a name for himself, quickly advancing through the ranks. When the Fujiwara family found out Hayato had become a gangster, they called the engagement with Ryoko off. However, Ryoko continued to love and support Hayato. She was able to do this thanks to Hiroto and his wife Wakako Okada, both serving as liaisons to Ryoko and Hayato, helping the lovers maintain their connection during those trying times.

2040s[]

In 2042, Shinobu died under mysterious circumstances, triggering a civil war within the Tyger Claws over his possessions. Hayato was in the middle of this conflict, and his enemies saw Wakako and Hiroto as his weakness. They attacked the couple, and despite their resistance, only Wakako managed to survive. After a great deal of bloodshed, Hayato won, inheriting Shinobu's asset management company, the Nakagawa Foundation, and becoming the new boss of the Tyger Claws. His lover Ryoko had been instrumental in winning the inheritance dispute and not long after they married despite her family's objections. Hayato took the name "Shinobu the Second" both to honor his predecessor and to cement his power base. Afterwards, he promised to provide for Wakako in Hiroto's place, making her a member of the Tyger Claws whether she liked it or not. Takeru Akagi and Zen would also become two of his most trusted advisors, with the later owing a debt to Shinobu that he intended to repay by serving his son.

Hayato modeled his persona on the "Kabuki-mono," Japanese rockerboy samurai of the 16th century, from which the word Kabuki originated. With his polished body full of cyberware and a flashy costume, Hayato treated the street as his theater, and regular parades made him a hero to the youth of the Kabuki sub-district. He also left the leadership of the Nakagawa Foundation to his his wife, whom he considered his most trusted partner. While he respected her wishes on how to maintain the financial stability of the Foundation, he thought it was increasingly difficult to retain respect from the local Japanese community and the Night City Co-Prosperity Sphere — an organization Shinobu had helped to create and a major sponsor of the Tyger Claws.

By 2045, Hayato had taken even more cybernetic enhancements to dull the pain as he felt the carefully built Tyger Claws empire was slipping away.[1]
