Description[]

Maine doesn't seem to be himself. But the team has bigger fish to fry: They must race against time to extract vital information from their prisoner.

Summary[]

'Girl on Fire's opening scene is a wide desert view with hills and skyscrapers in the distance. The audience can hear the talk of a radio show, until the scene focuses on a runner, who is crossing this great hot nothingness. It turns out to be Maine, but he is younger and has no visible chrome on his body. From the off Dorio's voice can be heard, pulling him back from this daydream or memory. His shaking hands can't hold the packet of food he receives from her and drops it on the floor.

Dorio is clearly worried, but he assures her he is fine despite using incredible amounts of medicine to stabilize his arm. He's clearly showing signs of Cyberpsychosis and angrily rejects Dorio's suggestion to downgrade and to cure his nerves. As Maine is rambling on in his anger, the scene moves on to Falco in the same room and then to Tanaka's body, clearly beaten and bound. Kiwi is in the bathtub next to him, deeply immersed in a complicated data session. The crew is extremely stressed to get their hands on the information in a timely manner. David is concerned about Maine's unusually aggressive behavior.

Due to that, Maine has a violent outburst, attacks Kiwi in his rage and beats her unconscious. However, he snaps out of his psychosis shortly afterwards and can't remember what he did to Kiwi. Dorio and Falco keep him from doing more harm. In their desperation to gather the needed data, they call Lucy at home and urge her to take over, but she's reluctant and afraid to join the session. She only agrees after David encourages her and promises to be with her the whole time as a backup. Maine has another psychotic episode, but Dorio can help him to break free of it. A call from Faraday adds to the pressure.

Meanwhile, Tanaka awakens from his unconscious state, before David can give him another tranquilizer. The man begins a brief conversation with David, telling him to be the one behind David's reinstatement at the Academy, because they saw his great potential. Tanaka keeps on talking and tries to convince David to inform Arasaka to end this madness. He suspects Militech behind this project. Lucy can break through to the data and begins downloading the valuable information - but also stumbles upon David's data.

Maine and Dorio discover Tanaka is awake and both panic. Maine grabs the tranquilizer from David's hands, but before he can do anything Tanaka gets electrocuted. They are able to save Lucy and to reanimate Tanaka, but Dorio informs them that the jammer, to suppress Trauma Team notification, is no longer working. They hurry to get away. David activates the Sandevistan to rush Lucy to the car on the parking deck, where she wakes up and informs David about the truth. She initially tells him it's all a scam and Tanaka has no relevant data for them, but David realizes she is lying and is instead afraid of what she found out. At the same time, Maine and Dorio do their best to move Tanaka, still convinced he's important to their mission. They get caught up in the crossfire of Trauma Team and NCPD, and Maine's cyberpsychosis is now beginning to manifest to the point where he is no longer able to control himself. Dorio tries to help him but is shot dead by one of the cops. Caught in this delusion, Maine kills Tanaka. Despite Lucy's warning to go and help them, David leaves her alone in the car and tries to support Maine, but it's too late - MaxTac is on their way. Maine meanwhile has accepted his fate and that it is the end for him. He still is planning to go out with a bang and has placed all the ammunition in an altar-like manner in the room - with Dorio's corpse upon it. David manages to escape the explosion and returns to Lucy. The episode ends with them driving through the city in the early morning light and David holding on tightly to Maine's left cyberware arm that he had taken.
