DV Rambling Rose is a moored cargo vessel located in the Industrial Zone of Heywood, a suburb of Night City.

Overview[]

The Rambling Rose was a rusted old cargo vessel of 100 m/yds long and 16 m/yds wide. It was classified as a small feeder, rather than a full-sized container ship. Located in a drylock, the Rose was home to a commune of squatters, as well as the base of operations for Fixie's Couriers. A NET Architecture connected the vessel's systems together, including surveillance.

Stacked empty containers acted as apartment blocks which were accessed by ladders, stairwells, and open-air walkways fenced off by reclaimed wrought rebar. Much of the metalwork found in those makeshift apartments was covered with bright automotive enamel paint to protect it from the salt air of the neighboring sea. There was a small garden and water storage, as well as a battery stack providing power. The accommodation area, which had been modified to house a command center from where Fixie organized her couriers, gave access to the lower decks via stairs. Apart from containers, the main deck had a number of cargo hatches and a crane. There were also multiple dollies and pallets that the couriers used to organize and move shipments, at least two well-mantained forklifts, and lifter exoskeletons.[1]

History[]

The Rambling Rose served as a small cargo ship until the early 2020s, when it was moored in a drylock of Heywood for maintenance. However, when the Fourth Corporate War reached Night City, the work had to be halted and the ship was eventually abandoned after the Night City Holocaust of 2023.

Over the following years, the Rambling Rose became the home of squatters, who stabilized and repurposed it as living space. Using some of the still-functioning industrial cranes, they stacked empty containers into rough apartment blocks accessed initially by ladders, and then by open-air walkways and stairwells. In time, the squatters also filled the damaged drylock with rubble, and repaired any gaps the ship had with concrete and compost, turning the old vessel and the remaining cargo containers within into a multiuse, make-shift complex. The ship itself was quite well-hidden among the warehouses and buildings of the Heywood Industrial Zone, making it a notorious hideout for the locals.

By the 2040s, the Rambling Rose was considered a dead vessel whose ancient and rusted old husk was forever stuck. It had recently become the base of operations of Fixie too, a local fixer who had been searching for a shipping hub for her goods. Thanks to her, the Rose commune evolved into a courier collective that used bicycles to deliver messages and goods, all guided (not lead) by Fixie. Corporations working in the Industrial Zone left the ship squatters alone as long as they didn't interfere with their businesses.[1][2]

Around 2045, the Rambling Rose was taken over by Lightning Logistics, a group of edgerunners and other freelancers working for Harry Depuy. He knew Fixie and her work, and had even collaborated with her in the past, but Harry had kicked them out in hopes of taking over her operations. Unfortunately for him, Harry didn't know how to operate as good as Fixie, and was eventually ousted by group of mercenaries hired to fix that mess.[1]
