City Center was a district of Central Night City, located to the north. It was considered part of the City & Corporate District.
Overview[]
The City Center was designed as the governmental nexus and hub of Night City. From its stately modern buildings and halls filled with bustling officials originated the decisions that shaped the city's future. Much of this area was patrolled by the NCPD and corporate security.
This district was the heart where the democratically elected Mayor and the City Council were seated, leading the metropolis from the impressive City Hall, a building stylized to imitate the colonial government houses from the East Coast. Theoretically, Night City was what was known as a Corporate Controlled New City Democratic Mayoralty; in other words, a strappy in which the ten largest corporations in the city got to place their own board members on the City Council, while the Mayor was ostensibly chosen from an open field of candidates elected by popular vote. However, it was commonly accepted that the city's IdentiCard™ voter-registration software was so heavily compromised by corporate netrunners that the real election was all but impossible. Thus, the mayor was a simple puppet for the corporations.
The City Center was home to many of the municipal buildings such as the City Hall, Justice Court, the municipal library or the museum. Also located in this the rest of this district were several business centers, banks, restaurants or services such as La Croix and the NCART City Center Station. This area also had an underground parking garage beneath the municipal buildings (8eb per hour), and an even larger CitiPark underground garage to the north (7eb per hour). NCTC bus connections to other parts of Central & South Night City were available through lines 22, 68 and 72. NCART connections with the metropolitan area were available as well. Fallout shelters (shared with the nearby Corporate Plaza) were located in the subbasement of the governmental area, with an occupancy of around five thousand people.
Although the corps owned Night City in all but name, Mayor Mbole Ebunike had a change of heart and by 2020 was taking steps to regain municipal powers lost in the former decade. This decision made him very unpopular with the powers that be.[1]
During the Fourth Corporate War, an assault on the nearby Arasaka Towers ended with a nuclear device going off. This caused the Night City Holocaust, an event that destroyed much of the City & Corporate District, turning the area into what would be known as the Hot Zone. The ruins of what did not survive of the Old City Center were part of that wasteland.[2]
