Carter Smith[2] was an Arasaka computer specialist working directly as V's assistant, should V choose the Corpo lifepath.[3] He is a capable technology specialist, but dislikes working for the Arasaka Corporation, finding their methods unethical.
Biography[]
Carter was employed by the Arasaka Corporation's Counter Intelligence Division, helmed by Arthur Jenkins. Carter's mother, Mary, was extremely proud of his success, although Carter was disgusted with the objectives required by Jenkins of his employees.[2]
At some point, Carter learns of Jenkins' planned assassination of Susan Abernathy, the Director of Special Operations. Carter, likely naively assuming he should do the right thing by all decent standards, informs Abernathy of Jenkins' attack. The entire Counter Intelligence Division is then purged by Abernathy's agents. Carter, despite being the one responsible for exposing the plot, is also targeted for knowing too much for someone of his position within the company, although this is likely simply Abernathy's excuse to remove the last "loose end" aware of her personal misdeeds against the company and in general. Abernathy threatens to kill Carter should he not submit to "disciplinary action" for treason against the corporation, a death sentence by any other words in and of itself, to which Carter responds she is just as awful as Jenkins and that she would never recieve the satisfaction of killing him. True to his word, Carter commits suicide by jumping off a bridge and drowning in the bay northeast of City Center.[4]
