History[]
In the late 1990s, Canada broke up with the US. The federal government still provides free health care*. But you wouldn't think that Canada is a unified country with all the state militias operating border checkpoints and most other government services being run by corporations. The one thing that still holds the country together is the national lacrosse team, which dominates the world stage, beating Japan in the world finals three times in the last five years. The frozen north has declared independence from the colonialists and declared all of northern Canada an independent Inuit nation. It's not so cold here, (global warming) Polar bears have crossed with grizzlies, creating hybrid Mega Bears that now ravage the landscape. They accept federal funding/support as part of a peace treaty. They are keeping bears in the north as part of the treaty. The western side of the Alberta Northwest has broken away, becoming one of North America's oil giants and rivaling the free state/nation of Texas. Of course, biofuel can power modern 21C engines. But plastics still come from oil, and the murky future literally cannot suffice. Alberta Northwest is a close ally of the free state of Alaska and a member of the North Oil Alliance. Eastern Quebec has severed and tightened ties with the European Union and, with the help of Biotechnology and EBM, the regional government (derived from the maple syrup mafia) now has a monopoly on the global maple syrup market. Maple syrup is considered the highest of luxury goods in Europe. Here you will find the highest European luxury imports among the wealthy elite. Leaving the 'lower class American junk' to everyone else. Which leaves the industrialized areas of Winnipeg Ontario. Which frankly is amazing that they survived the nuclear fallout when Detroit collapsed. Toronto is now the second largest car manufacturing city in North America, after Mexico. Cheap American (often illegal) immigrant labor is abundant, and it is a popular stop for Nomads looking to upgrade their vehicles. Canada is still a country with incredible emptiness and a thin population adjacent to the NUSA border. The environmental devastation caused by decades of uncontrolled industry has made it a more frightening, barren wasteland than the endless forests of decades ago. The tree still exists, but the remaining plantations are jealously guarded.[citation needed]
