The Biotechnica Palm Grove is located in Woodland Park, in the New Westbrook suburb of Night City.
History[]
Early history[]
During the Time of the Red, Biotechnica bioengineered a number of palm trees they planted in this groove. Most were relatively normal, with various genetic modifications designed to increase resistance to pollution, drought, background radiation, and other environmental factors. Each tree was fitted with a metal collar containing an external biomonitor, and once a week a group of technicians visited the grove to check and maintain its plant life. Everyone in the Woodland Park neighborhood knew that messing with the trees in any way summoned a corporate strike force, so they usually left them alone. Although open to the public, the grove was clearly marked as Biotechnica's property, including signs with a phone number.[1]
2045[]
By 2045, this triangular park was home to a handful of really tall palm trees. However, there was a particular one which was considered a unique experimental feat. Located on the southwestern side of the grove, this tree was a hybrid with DNA spliced from a Venus flytrap, and was remarkable enough to keep the local rat population down by luring them into its skirts and crushing the rodents with its fronds. More shockingly, the flytrap genes had been modified to accelerate the digestion process, happening in mere minutes rather than hours. Despite locals knowing about its dangers, an intern working in the nearby Dynalar Campus decided to climb the tree after a wild night in the neighboring Xanadu club. Brendan Haight took an interest on the unique plant life and bet to his friends he could climb it up to retrieve a frond. After successfully reaching the top, the lower fronds slammed down, pinning Brendan on the tree. His screams and those of his friends attracted a shocked, yet entertained and unhelpful crowd. From their commentaries, this had happened at least once more, with the victim only surviving for a handful of minutes before being crashed to death. If a mercenary crew happened to be close by, it was possible for them to rescue Brendan.[1]
